One of the most frequent questions we're asked at talks and seminars has to do with meeting new people. Most of our questioners are asking about meeting potential partners for intimate relationships, but the very same advice applies to business and social relationships of all kinds.
Here's the first thing you need to know:
If you feel awkward meeting people, begin at the source to change that awkwardness to ease and confidence. The source: A part of you that you've never fully examined keeps you from feeling at ease when you meet people you're attracted to or want to connect with. If you will look at that aspect of yourself--just focus on it for a few moments in a special way--it will begin to release its grip on you.
Here's exactly how to find that part of you. It's exactly the same process we would use if you were in our office. You may be surprised how easy it is, but you may also be surprised at how powerful it is.
Look at this timeline:
After I finished going to school
When I was in high school
When I was in elementary school
Before I was in elementary school
Before I could walk
Before I was born
Tune in to your sense of feeling awkward when you meet people. It might be a vague body-feeling, or maybe it's a thought in your mind. Somewhere in you, though, you can sense the part of you that feels awkward. Just give it some attention for a moment.
Simply considering that this feeling of awkwardness had a beginning some time in your past helps you immensely. The reason: Up until now, you may have thought this feeling was a necessary and essential part of you. Now, you begin to understand that it's just something you learned once upon a time, and anything you learned can be un-learned or re-learned.
