Interviews with People Who Make a Difference : On the Healing Power of Music

Interview with Steven Halpern
as interviewed by Daniel Redwood DC

What I see in the next couple of years is going back to the initial intent and outreach. Going back into hospitals, and really creating a context where music is available to people who are going into surgery and coming out of surgery. I'm now taking part in a research project that hopefully will demonstrate the benefits that this music together with guided imagery can provide. We are also working in the field of education, working with children to create a more harmonious environment for babies and youngsters, helping them to grow up in a situation where they are not, shall we say, bent out of tune by the music in their surroundings. Indeed, I believe that getting a balance in their music diet is crucial. If they want to listen to rock and rap and heavy metal, if they can add in some of this relaxing music, their nervous systems will be able to grow and mature in a more beneficial fashion. On an individual level and a societal level, they would be less violent, would learn better, and their self-esteem would be enhanced.

Among my other goals are to bring my music into hospices, to help people to make the transition to the next phase of existence . . . and to have it become more widely utilized in the workplace. This music can help people become more focused, when they're thinking or at the computer. It can be an important part of people's daily diet of music. This is music you can wake up with, be born with, and that can get you through your day. That's really the way I see my mission. I am more dedicated than ever to seeing it really make a difference, really make a contribution to the lives of more and more people in this country and around the world.
