Though appropriate in selected cases, cough syrup combinations should not be used routinely. Different cases, and even the same case at different stages, requires different treatment. The addition of appropriate remedies to a standard cough syrup base is an appropriate means of using the syrup as a vehicle without becoming unduly reliant on a particular preformulated remedy.
